Preparing Your Shipment

The method of shipping is up to your own discretion. The majority of our shipments are received through the post office by registered or insured mail. UPS or Motor Freight are used to ship the larger refining shipments such as floorsweeps and polishing dust.

Packaging Your Scrap

Avoid using ziplock bags and do not wrap bags with adhesive tape. This causes your scrap to be caught in the lip of the bag and adheres to the tape. Boxes and drums (35 gal. only) are provided to our customers upon request.

In addition, include a letter or note with a contact name, name of your company, address, phone number, approximate weight and description of your material, assay instructions and what payment option or product you would like in return for your refining. This information will help expedite the processing of your shipment through our Refining Department. Refining forms are available upon request.

Six Easy Steps To Package Your Scrap For Shipment

1. Double plastic bag and seal your material securely.
2. Place into a secure box along with a cover letter.
3. Label the outside of your box clearly with your name & address.
4. Mark “RUSH” on the OUTSIDE of the BOX when requesting RUSH SERVICE.
5. Address your shipment to: Hoover & Strong, 10700 Trade Rd., Richmond, VA 23236-3000. No need to mark the package to anyone's attention. All packages come to our refining division.
6. Drop into the mail.

Sweeps

We realize that smaller jewelry shops create smaller quantities of sweeps. If 3 lbs. of sweep material (polishing dust, emery, vacuum bags, etc.) is received, an effort is made to burn it and then melt it as clean material. (Minimum $125)

Stone Removal & Return
Save labor and let us reclaim your melee diamonds. Jewelry scrap with diamonds can be chemically refined and your stones returned. Allow 15-20 working days processing time. (Minimum 5 Oz and $200) Opals, colored and synthetic stones usually undergo color changes, chipping and cracking.

Normal Processing Schedule

Upon arrival at the plant:

• Clean Material (bench scrap & filings): 5 working days
• Platinum & Palladium assays: 7 working days
• Polishings (buffing dust, emery, etc.-under 10 lbs.): 10 working days
• Floorsweeps (10 lbs and up): 12 working days
• Karat scrap for stone removal: 15-20 working days

Rush Refining Service is NOW AVAILABLE.

24 hour refining service - $50 additional charge subject to seasonal business. This service is offered on clean gold scrap shipments only. Your scrap can be turned into cash within 24 hours from the time it is received at our facility. Your package is opened, melted, assayed and ready for payment of your choice. Your check can be sent by Federal Express the same day the assay is completed. View FedEx charges. RUSH SHIPMENTS must be marked "RUSH" on the "OUTSIDE" of the box or package to ensure priority handling of your scrap.
